How To Remove Rust Using Miracle Clean

Kitchen knives are used in environments that are not fully compatible with them, such as near water like at a kitchen sink. They also cut ingredients that are highly salty or acidic such as tomatoes, lemons, cured meats and aged cheeses.

This puts kitchen knives, especially Japanese knives using high carbon steels like White Steel #1 at danger of rusting without proper care.

While rust looks harmless, ignoring it will worsen it, eventually causing the rust to pit into the knife and ruin its structural integrity. This will cause the knife to chip no matter how often you sharpen and polish it.

You must remove rust the moment you notice it. If rust is removed before pitting starts, it makes the knife last significantly longer.

When preventing rust fails, the easiest way to remove it is with a rust eraser like Miracle Clean! This is the rust eraser we sell and use in our store, and this article will show you exactly how to use it.

Miracle Clean makes restoring your knives simple, and is easy to use!

The raw material in Miracle Clean comes from Germany, and it is an incredibly abrasive stone. As it's both light and small, it can be used in the same method that you would use an eraser - hence the "rust eraser" name!

Not only can this remove light rust from a surface, but if you take your time polishing, it can even remove large swathes of red rust.

How to Use Miracle Clean

Keep in mind these steps are specifically for removing rust with Miracle Clean. For a more general guide, you can look at our articles on why rust occurs, how to prevent it and how to remove it in a more general situation.

A simple way to use Miracle Clean is use it like you would use a regular eraser. Apply it to the rust, and with some work the rust will vanish! Just get the rusty surface wet first with a bit of water. It will take time to complete, but less time than you think.

Follow the picture guides below for a more detailed approach and use these steps to bring your rusted knife back to life. Depending on the rust, this can be done in under thirty minutes!

Extra Tips for Polishing

Polish along the grain

A knife has polishing grains on its surface, so if you polish along those grains you'll get a better finish at the end.

Generally, Japanese-style knives have a diagonal grain, while Western-style knives have a horizontal grain (from the spine to the cutting edge).

Polish the entire surface evenly

In addition to rust, there may be dirt and small scratches on your knife due to general wear and tear or other factors.

By polishing the entire surface evenly, you may be able to restore the shine and finish back to a near-new condition. This of course, depends on the current condition of your knife. Temper expectations if it's a heavy restoration job.

Polishing your knife after removing rust makes it look nicer and perform better!

Miracle Clean Precautions

Miracle Clean has a very high abrasiveness in order to thoroughly remove rust. If you use it on a new knife or one that's already well-polished, it may leave cosmetic damage like marks or scratches. Be very, very careful with this.

If your knife has a brand marker on it that isn't etched into the knife, it might even get polished away, so don't work a rusted surface as heavily if there's also other markings or designs in that area you're wanting to keep. Take a longer time with it and use less force if required.

If you polish along the grain but are still worried about scratches, you can use a special kind of whetstone called a crystal whetstone to remove those and work towards a nicer finish. Crystal whetstones are finer stones, and can be used for precise work in the same way you would use a rust eraser due to their small size and light weight. We sell crystal whetstones in our store as well, just contact us and ask for one!
